The term Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) describes the gathering and analysis of data obtained from a large number of interconnected sensors during the useful life of a structure or piece of equipment. It is a non-destructive and continuous way of determining and quantifying the object's state of deterioration to foretell the need for maintenance and repair.In the field of construction management and maintenance, structural health monitoring for civil constructions is becoming more and more common on a global scale.

SHM allows for greater comprehension of the behaviour of structures under dynamic loads, seismic protection, and inspection costs and research time in real or nearly real-time data information.SHM of civil structures guarantees improved post-earthquake management and supports rescue efforts. However, because of the detrimental impacts of structural reactions, Structural Health Monitoring of static and dynamic stress of dams has received considerable attention over the years. Due to various environmental factors and additional load circumstances, the actual structural responses of dams deviate from the baseline values predicted during design.

Depending on the style of construction, the assumptions used in structural modelling, analysis, and discrepancies in the proposed design and final structure, these deviations are predicted to be seen.Implementing a damage detection and characterisation technique for engineered structures, such as buildings and bridges, is known as Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). In simple terms, it is the process of continuously and in real-time learning about the integrity of the in-service structures.

The SHM technique involves tracking a system throughout time with the aid of response measurements that are periodically sampled from a variety of sensors. Operational evaluation, data collecting, standardisation, and purification, feature extraction and data compression, and statistical model creation are some of the procedures that are involved in Structural Health Monitoring. Structure, sensors, data collecting systems, data management, data interpretation, and data diagnosis are some of the components of a SHM system.
