Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless connectivity technology that simplifies digital content sharing, transactions, and connections with various electronic devices for users across the world. It is mostly utilised for short-range data sharing in cellphones, laptops, and tablets (up to 10 cm or less). This technology is used in a variety of other applications, including chip-enabled mobile marketing, ticketing, identification & access, and gaming. It is also used in marketing and payment applications.
The NFC tag is a passive gadget that relies on an active device for operation because it lacks its own power source. NFC tags use Near Field Communication technology to send & store a wide variety of data, including brief text passages, web addresses, and contact information, among other things. NFC-based tags are very affordable and can be used again by clearing the data that has been stored. Only short-range data transfer is suitable for near-field communication. The communicating devices must be close to one another or should have a space of 4 cm or less between them for communication to occur when using NFC technology. This is a serious flaw in NFC technology.
Near Field Communication offers flimsy privacy protection for a device, making it susceptible to unintentional reception of harmful data or malware. There aren't many protections against data tampering and data sniffing in the NFC protocol. Security is a major problem because one of the most widely used applications of this technology is "Contactless Payment System." Since NFC does not utilise authentication, the user may also be seriously endangered by the transfer of malicious software. Consequently, in order to utilise the potential features of an NFC-enabled application securely, a secure NFC application is required.
