It is produced using the free-radical polymerization of hydrochloric acid, fluorspar, and chloroform. PTFE is frequently used to provide surfaces, particularly kitchenware like pans and baking trays, as well as industrial goods, a non-stick coating. It frequently comes in granular, powder, and micronized forms, and it has a number of different physical characteristics, such as resistance to heat, chemicals, fatigue, and ultraviolet (UV) rays, as well as low water absorption and high electrical insulation. Because of these advantages, it is widely used in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, chemical processing, electrical, automotive, and construction.

Due to its extensive surface lubricity and anti-blocking characteristics, PTFE is also utilized in electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and culinary applications. It is also utilized as a lubricant in machines since it has the capacity to reduce wear and fuel consumption in machinery.

Other industrial and chemical uses for PTFE include gaskets, linings, washers, interiors of pumps, seals, etc. Additionally, PTFE film is widely utilized in the manufacture of fiberglass and carbon fiber composites, particularly in the aerospace sector. When debulking (removing air by vacuum from between layers of laid-up plies of material) and curing the composite, typically in an autoclave, PTFE film is used as a bar between the carbon or fiberglass part being built and breather and bagging materials.
