A material that resembles a sponge is called plastic foam, also known as polymer foam. Typically, it is a dispersion of a gas in a polymer matrix in the form of a blowing agent. Plastic can be foamed through physical, chemical, and mechanical processes.

In the cushioning industry, Plastic Foams are used in mattresses, upholstery, and in the padding of sporting equipment. Finally, in the flotation industry, plastic foams are used in the manufacture of life jackets and rafts.

Plastic Foams can be divided into two broad categories: closed-cell and open-cell. Closed-cell plastic foams are made up of tiny bubbles of air that are trapped within a solid polymer matrix. This structure gives closed-cell foams their excellent insulation and buoyancy properties. Open-cell foams, on the other hand, have a porous structure, where the air bubbles are connected, making them more flexible and softer.

One of the most common types of Plastic Foams is polyurethane (PU) foam. PU foam is used in a wide range of applications, including cushioning, insulation, and flotation. This foam is made by reacting a polyol with an isocyanate, which creates a polymer that can be molded into various shapes. The properties of PU foam can be tailored by adjusting the formulation, making it an ideal material for specific applications.

Another common type of plastic foam is polyethylene (PE) foam. PE foam is known for its low density, excellent cushioning properties, and resistance to moisture. This makes it ideal for use in packaging and cushioning applications. PE foam can also be made into various shapes, including sheets, rolls, and custom shapes, making it an extremely versatile material.

Finally, expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is another commonly used plastic foam. EPS foam is known for its excellent insulation properties, making it ideal for use in construction and packaging applications. EPS foam can be molded into various shapes and sizes, making it a popular material for the manufacture of packaging peanuts and protective packaging for delicate items.
